LEGACY

for Tsvetaeva

The grains you saved are still fermenting.
This the wine I must swallow.
The kerosene you saved still sighs.
This the night I must endure.

All night you stroll the constellations,
smoking, coughing,
your pain unfinished,
grinding its inhuman mill.

The abyss you plumbed I still measure,
your dark clouds’ millage
waiting for my breath,
woe’s undying legacy
leading me to you.

I wept at your photograph
mirroring my own decline.
Your slightest glance, my hair
a white conflagration.
