VARIATION ON A RENAISSANCE THEME

Love is just like the star of evening

floating along the blackest sky

With the doors latched there is no leaving!

put out all candles where you’re living

make your flesh fortified

you

whose hearts are stone petrified

Love is just like a shapely ship

without its captain lost and gone

and all the sailors’ hands are shaking

with their fear of tomorrow morn

Love is an ache from sleeping woken

and the hot hands of stars

sprinkling honeymoon petal tokens

through your jail window bars

Love is just like the star of evening

floating along the sky so black

Our life

is like a candle burning

the dead

cannot love you back
