V kamnech praská, dědek každou chvíli
The stove crackles; an old codger, wheezy,
svadlé ruce sobě zahřívá,
stretches weary hands once more to warm,
kolo vrčí, syn si s prací pílí,
the wheel whirrs, his son is making busy,
nádobu si z dřeva vyrývá.
gouging out a wooden bowl to form.
Kolečko si divnou píseň šumí,
Chirping an odd chant, the wheel is singing,
vnoučeti se očka kmitají –
making flit the grandson’s watchful eye –
„Hele, co náš táta všecko umí,
“Look, see what our Dad can do, he’s flinging
jak mu tříšťky z rukou létají!
shavings from his hand; they sure can fly!
Dřevo ukradl jsi v panském lese —
From their lordships’ grove the wood you’ve taken —
komu děláš z něho koryto?“
for the trough you’re making, who’s it for?”
„„Dědovi; — již se mu ruka třese,
““Grandad; — now his grip is weak and shaking,
nádobí už všechno rozbito.““
lest he drops more crockery on the floor.””
„Nauč mne to!“ — „„Vida toho kluka,
“Teach me how!” — ““Why, look at you now, laddie,
nač by to tvá ruka uměla?!““
why would such a thing be yours to try?!””
„Až se tobě třásti bude ruka,
“When your own hand gets to be unsteady,
koryto ti synek udělá!“
then your son will make your trough, that’s why!”
V kamnech praská, dědek shrben pláče,
The stove crackling; codger crouched, eyes tearful,
svadlé ruce syn mu zulíbá,
his son takes his weary hands, to kiss,
kolo mlčí, vnouče kolem skáče —
stilled, the wheel; the grandson prancing, cheerful —
„Táto, proč se kolo nehýbá?“
“Why’s the wheel not moving, Daddy, please?”
