READING

Read in the morning,
depressed by afternoon,
each book an empty pocket,
holed.

Trees one beside another,
silent land. We pace up and down,
reclining, weary, reading in the shade.

A row of vegetables, just sown—
as they grow, how to say
they must accept
the doctrine of the knife?
