旧版本 新版本 1 Whatever joy the first snow brought 1 Rain through the night, hard to sleep, 2 has long subsided. Falling without end 2 but the first cool breath all summer, 3 across upstate New York, 3 pouring from the eaves, 4 beyond the window 4 splattering the front steps, 5 snow mantles snow, 5 seeping past the threshold. 6 white fact cancels white fact. 7 Your days fill with snow. 8 For one unaccustomed to boots, 9 just stepping outside is trouble. 10 My wife and son head off for their sweet nap, 11 his bike,“Red Rock-It”, 12 propped at the stoop, 13 half-buried. 14 The washer thrums and spins, 15 the apples on the table at peace, 16 the English-Chinese dictionary, at peace. 17 My steps, 18 measuring the stillness, 19 more silent. 20 A glance toward the snowy hills, distant, veiled. 21 6 22 trans. © Diana Shi & George O’Connell 7 Rain drowns the sunflower’s blaze, 8 wastes wrought iron to rust. 9 Little toads appear 10 one and another, 11 hopping by the door. 12 13 I listen to the rain 14 in a low, gray dawn 15 in a cool, dim room. 16 The man inside me 17 takes the rainbeaten road 18 straight south. 19 20 South lies Beijing, shrouded in mist, those years 21 of poverty, its balm wafting 22 from flowering pagoda trees, the latched window 23 banging open in storms, someone wrapped 24 in an old raincoat vanishing forever 25 at the end of an alley. Drains awash, 26 stalled cars on the road in the downpour, 27 the useless sweep of their wipers. 28 29 Rain never falls 30 until one’s dead 31 many years. 32 33 Rain hammers your roof 34 and drives your gaze to ground. 35 Hibiscus, laden with blooms, 36 sway heavily. 37 The room once bathed in summer glow 38 glooms in the rain. 39 40 Each year thunder booms from the mountaintops. 41 Each year the sound of rain enters our bodies. 42 Each day some of us die. 43 44 In rain the stones sprout moss. 45 46 trans. © Diana Shi & George O’Connell with PKU Poetry Translation Workshop - 3个月前 李大侠 更改了诗歌正文
