译记：这是一首著名的狄金森。诗人想象着一个特殊的瞬间：死亡之际。

整首诗是一位逝者在描述她自己离世时的情景。

当时，房间内一片静寂。亲友们环伺周边，显然都知道她最后的时刻即将来临，屏声静气，等待着死亡降临，即神来到房间，引领她离去。

她已经把尘世的事务安排完毕。就在一片肃穆之中，她听到、看到了一只苍蝇。这只苍蝇在她和窗子（光亮）之间，是世间最后吸引了她的注意力的事情。

随后，窗子变得模糊，淡出了她的视线。随后，她视而不见，也就是说，她睁着眼，但是已经看不见任何事情了。

原文的末行“I could not see to see”历来为读者激赏。注意第二个“see”也有“理解、辨别”的意思。
