There was a ferryman. In bridgeless territory
Byl jeden převozník. V kraji, kde není mostů,
he ferried pilgrims to a way-too-far shore verge.
převážel pocestné na nedostupný břeh.
He had a hut, a strong boat: I grow, was his story,
Měl dům a pevnou loď. Říkal jí: pohleď, rostu,
when in the flow my hands oars-clenching I submerge.
když ruce ponořím do proudu ve veslech.
What did they know of him, those one-way going!
Co o něm věděli ti, co se nevraceli!
What did he know of them! What did the river know!
Co o nich věděl on! Co řeka! A co proud!
Just that he was, they’d met him, briefly, rowing.
Jen to, že prostě je, že na chvíli ho zřeli.
Just that they’d had to come, to float across and go.
Jen to, že musili přijít a odplynout.

And you went too. Thousands this way are passing.
Přišel jsi také ty. Tisíce tudy minou.
Don’t ask, just go to where the ferry takes.
Po ničem neptej se a dej se převézti.
Pay the fare. Don’t talk. Over the water crossing
A zaplať poplatek. A mlč. A nad hladinou
don’t seek the true face of your bygone aches.
nehledej pravou tvář své dávné bolesti.
Soon you’ll step out, the boat will turn, receding.
Už brzo vystoupíš a loď se zase vrátí.
And you’ll go on, by all back there betrayed.
A půjdeš kupředu, vším vzadu podveden.
Something’s ahead. Too late to die, unheeding.
Cosi je před tebou. Je pozdě umírati.
The scouts of the horizon portend approaching day.
Rozvědky obzoru říkají, že jde den.
