我听见一个天使歌唱

I heard an Angel singing

当太阳正在升上，

When the day was springing，

“慈悲，怜悯，和平

“Mercy, Pity, Peace，

是世界的救星。”

Is the world's release.”

他整天这样唱

Thus he sung all day

在新刈的稻草上，

Over the new mown hay，

直到太阳下坡，

Till the sun went down

稻草堆显出棕色。

And haycocks looked brown.

我听见一个魔鬼诅咒

I heard a Devil curse

在丛莽和金雀花上头，

Over the heath and the furze，

“再不会有怜悯

“Mercy could be no more

倘若没有人贫困，

if there was nobody poor；

“慈悲将无法存在

“And pity no more could be

要是人人一样欢快。”

If all were as happy as we.”

他诅咒完，太阳便往下溜，

At his curse the sun went down，

众天空皱了一皱额头。

And the heavens gave a frown.

接着是倾盆大雨

Down pour'd the heavy rain

淋透了新收的谷子，

Over the new reap'd grain；

于是贫困的加增，

And Miserie's increase

便是慈悲，怜悯，和平。

Is Mercy, Pity, Peace.
