Jest život milá kniha, kterou čteme;
Life is a book we love to read, to own;
ať ta, neb ta, — je každá nejdražší
this one or that — each volume utmost dear
tomu, kdo čte; ji rádi nezavřeme
to its own reader; loth to put it down
o vůli své a čtení unáší
of our own free will, in the reading, we’re
nás tak, že vše, co kolem, jenom bývá
so engrossed, that all else around is solely
jak šumný zvuk, jenž v ucho doráží
a hush of noise, struggling our ear to gain,
a v duši nevejde; tak duše splývá
and ne’er the soul; which is absorbed so wholly
s tím dějem povídky — a neváží,
by the ongoing tale — too entertained,
jak den a hodiny se zvolna snují.
as the days and the hours go slowly by.
A zatím venku stíny poletují
Meanwhile, outside, the shadows stretch to fly
a světnice se plní soumrakem
and the room fills with twilight, light grows thin,
a písmo se nám míhá před zrakem;
and the print fades, now scarcely to be seen;
a setmí se. My víme: Večer spěje —
and darkness falls: Evening our way is wending —
a odkládáme knihu s povzdechem.
and we sigh, put the book down, none too keen.
A nikdo nedočet’ se konce děje.
And not one yet has reached the story’s ending.
