在森林裡

In the forest

一個迷路的人，

a man who loses his way

開始恐懼起來，

gets frightened;

他的心不由自主地

his heart can’t help

變出了老虎和獅子。

breeding tigers and lions.

小時候聽到的，

Hellish ghosts

陰曹地府的鬼魂，

from childhood tales

也從記憶裡，

begin taking shape.

活靈活現地跑出來了。

At first he walks slowly,

他先是慢慢地走著，

pretending nothing’s wrong,

裝做若無其事的樣子

but soon, from behind,

走著，走著

faint sounds,

身後簌簌響起的聲音，

something following.

就像有一個人在追趕。

He walks faster,

他快速地走了起來，

not daring to look back.

連頭也不敢回一下。

The forest darkens,

森林裡漸漸暗下來，

in his heart beasts and ghouls

他心裡的老虎、獅子和鬼魂，

come to vivid life.

越來越生動。

Once he starts running,

這樣，

first east,

他就跑起來了，

then west,

一會兒向東，

he gets farther from the trail.

一會兒向西。

Now he’ll be eaten by real tigers,

隨後，

or devoured by his own terror.

他再也不知道路在哪裡了。

Yet just as before, the forest’s

他會被真的老虎吃掉，

bathed in gold evening,

也會被自己的恐懼嚇死。

and still there, the narrow path

而森林還跟往常一樣，

shimmering with light,

籠罩著金黃的夕光。

though few

一條小路乾淨地臥在那裡，

can see it

亮晃晃的，

and walk out.

只有很少的人，

看到了，

並且走了出去。
