If no apple fell

如果落向牛頓腦袋的

on Newton’s head,

不是蘋果

or it hadn’t dropped just so,

如果蘋果降落的姿態不準確

but drifted

如果蘋果是一種雪花

like a snowflake,

的灑落，那麼

like soft notes

輕柔的音符

flooding Newton’s ears,

同時襲向牛頓的耳朵

maybe he’d have only shivered

牛頓就開始哆嗦了

and sung a rhymeless tune.

唱沒有韻的歌

If the apple had descended

又如果蘋果墜落

like a whirlwind

以沉雄的撼動

flinging sand and stones,

挾沙石俱來

Newton might awaken

那麼牛頓甦醒

at the sunset of another day

是另一天的日落了

with an aching pate.

腦袋隱隱發痛

If the tree

如果蘋果樹上

had grown no apple,

沒有蘋果

Newton might have kept staring upward

牛頓夜夜仍向

night after starry night,

滿天星斗處仰望

with nothing to blame

這，只能怪牛頓自己

but himself.
