Ty, která platíš víc, než zlato platí,

You, noted, rated more than gold is rated,

ty, která všechno máš, co už se nenavrátí,

you, who keeps all, forever unrebated,

ty, v jejíchž rukou člověk zapomene

you, in whose arms a man forgets, abandoned,

všech břemen světa, sama bez břemene,

all the world’s burdens, yourself never burdened,

ty, která krutě rozkazuješ nésti

you, who decrees that pain be suffered, cruelly,

všem živým bolest, sama bez bolesti,

by all the living, yourself unpained surely,

ty, která přijdeš kořistí svou jista,

you, who arrives, certain of takings, steady,

ty, na niž nikdo se dost nepřichystá,

you, whose arrival finds none truly ready,

ty, smrti, věcná tanečnice žití,

you, Death, the dancer round life, never ending,

ty, před níž nemůže se zachrániti

you, against whom there can be no defending

ni ocel, mramor soch a kámen chrámů,

with steel, nor marble statues, temples vaulted,

ty, průvodkyně mrtvých po neznámu,

you, guide of the deceased through the exalted,

ty, beze změny jediná v tom světě,

you, the sole constant in this world applying,

zde máš: Hle, mrtvé tělo na lafetě,

here: See, the catafalque, the body lying,

jen vezmi je, to nejkrásnější dává

take it, the best we have you’re being given

ti tento národ, který oplakává

by this sad nation, whose bereavement’s riven

v tom mrtvém víc, než mohl ti snad dáti,

by a loss greater than your hunger, sated,

ty, která všechno máš, co už se nenavrátí,

you, who keeps all, forever unrebated,

jen vezmi jej do hlubokého klína,

take him on your deep lap to cradle, centered

kde ve tmě nikdy úsvit neprolíná,

in that deep shade, which dawn light’s never entered,

ať spočine už mrtvý spravedlivý.

to rest in peace, in just, commensurate station.

Nad jeho hrobem stojí národ živý.
