I have walked many roads,

我曾走过许多路途，

I have found many paths;

我曾开辟许多小径，

I have sailed a hundred seas,

我曾穿越一百个大海

and landed on a hundred shores.

在一百个河湾留停。

Everywhere I have seen

我所经行处

caravans of sadness,

悲伤如马车排成长队，

sober and melancholy

人们傲慢，悔恨

drunk with black shadow,

醉倒于黑色的阴影，

and pedants of cloth

乏味的学究

who look, quietly, and think

他们乜斜，沉默，自认

that they know, because they do not drink

无所不知，所以不喝

the wine in the taverns.

小酒馆的土酒。

Bad people who walk

可怜的人们在地面走动

and in walking soil the land…

散发腐败的气息……

And in all the places I have seen

而我所经行处

people who dance or play,

如可能，人们就跳舞，嬉戏

when they can, and work

并在他们

their four spans of land.

巴掌大的土地上劳作。

Never, when they come to a place,

如在某处落脚，

do they ask where to go.

从不会追问来路。

When they make their way, they ride

当他们行走，

on the back of an old mule,

或骑在驴背上旅行，

and do not know to hurry

从不知匆忙，

not even on the days of the fiesta.

甚至，在欢庆的日子。

Where they have wine, they drink wine;

如果有酒，就喝酒；

where they have no wine, fresh water.

如果没有，新鲜的水亦足够。

They are good people who live,

这些善人们生活，

work, pass the time and dream,

劳作，迁徙，做梦，

and on a day like many,

在某个普通的日子里，

rest beneath the soil.

回到泥土中安歇。
