###### MARGINALIA

Listening to parents discuss how to introduce poetry to their kids. This certain parent worries, “But what if my kid grows up and wants to be a poet? That should be terrible.” Oh, dear Curtis Fox, yes, yes, it would be terrible indeed. And so, so wonderful. I knew you were just kidding 🙂

This discussion, or [How to Raise a Poetry Imp](http://www.poetryfoundation.org/journal/audioitem.html?id=2202), is the perfect way to end my day. My country has just gotten a new president and I’m feeling pretty optimistic. My bank account shows I’ve only got less than a dollar left in there, and the last time I looked, I’m still writing poetry. Tender-hearted, barefooted and with a lot to lose, I’m drinking my coffee and will spend the night writing still.

Edward Estlin (E.E.) Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cummings earned both his BA and MA from Harvard, and his earliest poems were published in *Eight Harvard Poets* (1917). In 1922 he published his first book, *The Enormous Room*, a fictionalized account of his French captivity. Cummings’ first collection of poems, *Tulips and Chimneys*, appeared in 1923.
