A sorcerer came down the road
Čaroděj šel po silnici
by a cold wintry snowstorm slowed
v mrazné zimní chumelici,
came to a gallows, grim with load.
došel k šeré šibenici.
A tri-beam bare frame, on it strung
Šibenice trojram lysý,
three executed robbers swung.
na ní tři zloději visí.
He sat down. “Well met, hereabout.
Usednul. „Zde dobré bydlo.
Boys, you’ve a high life there, no doubt! –
Máte, hoši, pěkné sídlo! –
but now do hurry down to me,
ale teď už honem dolů,
let’s spend tonight in company!”
ponoclehujem tu spolu!“
He gestured, swore a magic curse,
Zaklel, máchnul rukou v kole
hopp! and they’re down, all none the worse.
hup! a již jsou všichni dole.
In a sinister ring they sat.
Zasedli kruh ve příšerný.
Their out-of-kilter heads back fitting,
Hlavy sobě napravují,
their master celebrating, greeting.
mistra chvalně pozdravují.
The first, hound-like and black as jet,
První jako pes je černý,
shoulders, knees jutting, bone and skin,
kde ramena tu kolena,
age-matted growth upon his chin;
brada věky neholena;
the second with hair wild atop,
druhý s hlavou rozsochatou,
with one peg leg to prop him up;
s nohou dřevem podepjatou;
the third – the lord preserve us! – was
třetí – pánbůh budiž s námi! –
quite naked – with an icy stare,
celý nahý – v očích ledy,
his face with hoarfrost grey, but bare
po tváři je jíním šedý
his body set with icicles.
a po těle střechýl samý.
“I’ve resurrected you, live on,
„Vzkřísil jsem Vás, dále žijte,
more evil deeds to perpetrate,
tropte dál svou lotrovinu,
yet, this day, serve me to atone.
za to mně dnes posloužíte.
Under the gallows shade, till late
V šibenice nočním stínu
let us enjoy some merriment
pospolu se pobavíme,
wine-drowned till drowsy, somnolent.
vínem spijem, povyspíme.
Go, rise, now bring me all we need,
Vzhůru, sneste, čeho třeba,
one cushions, and the second, bread,
jeden peřin, druhý chleba,
the third, wine – just a drop will do! –
třetí vína – kapka stačí! –
Go, fly now forth, you magpie crew!”
vzhůru, leťte, plémě stračí!“
Off, like a flock of birds they flew.
Vzlétli jako hejno ptačí.
As soon as whooshed by frenzied flight
Vzduch jen hvizdnul divým letem
through the air the first one descended.
a již první snes’ se zpátky.
““I bring a pillow, cushion supple
„„Nesu polštáříček malý,
from a poor widow, which I took
uzmul jsem jej vdově chudé
from underneath her sickly child;
churavícím pod dítětem;
short for us all, sure, to be candid –””
trochu na nás bude krátký –““
“That will be plenty for us, look!”
„Však ho na nás dosti bude!“
the master gives heart to his pupil;
mistr tovaryše chválí;
his spell property redefining:
říká slova, statek množe:
and lo, there’s fourfold soft reclining.
už tu čtvero měkké lože.
Above, a wistful breeze seems venting
Nad hlavami teskné vání,
denunciation, grief, lamenting.
jako dálné žalování.
And now the second has returned.
A již je tu nazpět druhý.
““I bring the wine, which I confess
„„Nesu víno, šel jsem zchytra
I took from the church warden’s store,
na skříň kostelního sluhy,
it was to serve for tomorrow’s mass;
mělo ku mši sloužit zítra;
just that there’s not much to be had –””
jen že je ho málo trochu –““
“Don’t fret, there’s plenty, my good lad!”
„Stačí nám, můj dobrý hochu!“
The master chants. And in reply
Mistr říká svoje bludy,
wine casks around them multiply.
a již vína kolem sudy.
In the air, sounds disconsolate,
Ve vzduchu to lačně hučí,
howling like cold grey wolves upset.
jak když šedí vlci skučí.
The third returned now, calls with glee:
Třetí tu a volá v plesu:
““I bring altar-bread, happily!
„„Svěcenou Ti hostyj nesu!
I snatched it from a travelling priest,
Vyrval jsem ji knězi ctnému,
hurrying to a near-deceased
nes’ ji k smrti nemocnému
to give him the last rites, no less!””
na poslední posilnění!““
“Fine bread, when there’s no other, yes –”
„Dobrý chléb, když jiný není –“
A thunderclap. – What is afoot?
Hrom v tom bouchnul. – Co se děje?
the earth quakes trembling underfoot,
zem se pod nohama chvěje,
the air is dense, with dust and soil
vzduch jak hlína, plný chmýru,
all spinning in a sudden broil,
vše se točí v náhlém víru,
everything as it stands and lies
co kde leží, co kde stojí,
torn, upward lifted, wild it flies,
vzhůru dolů lítá v roji,
and that foursome, in desperate hurry,
a ti čtyři v divém kůru
like flayed chaff, whirling in a flurry.
letí jako plevy vzhůru.
Then, one more plaintive sighing swell,
Ještě zavzdechnutí táhlé,
then silence, sudden silence fell.
a zas ticho, ticho náhlé.
A wintry silence. Breaking dawn,
Zimní ticho. Přišlo ráno,
a day-night blend insipid, fair,
s nocí den se plavě mísí,
over the road a tri-beam bare,
nad silnicí trojram lysý,
but for four fellows, hanging there.
na něm čtyři chlapi visí.
