如果落向牛頓腦袋的
If no apple fell
不是蘋果
on Newton’s head,
如果蘋果降落的姿態不準確
or it hadn’t dropped just so,
如果蘋果是一種雪花
but drifted
的灑落,那麼
like a snowflake,
輕柔的音符
like soft notes
同時襲向牛頓的耳朵
flooding Newton’s ears,
牛頓就開始哆嗦了
maybe he’d have only shivered
唱沒有韻的歌
and sung a rhymeless tune.
又如果蘋果墜落
If the apple had descended
以沉雄的撼動
like a whirlwind
挾沙石俱來
flinging sand and stones,
那麼牛頓甦醒
Newton might awaken
是另一天的日落了
at the sunset of another day
腦袋隱隱發痛
with an aching pate.
如果蘋果樹上
If the tree
沒有蘋果
had grown no apple,
牛頓夜夜仍向
Newton might have kept staring upward
滿天星斗處仰望
night after starry night,
這,只能怪牛頓自己
with nothing to blame
but himself.
